Keep Ants Out of the Office

Posted by: Cooper Pest

Remember when your mother yelled at you when you were a child for leaving crumbs lying around because, “the house would be taken over by ants”? Well, as we tend to realize with age, mom was right. Loose food is like a beacon leading colonies of thousands of ants to the Holy Grail that is your home or even office building for that matter. That’s right, mom’s crumb lectures should be applied while you are at work as well.

At Cooper Pest Solutions (like many other companies), our workers occasionally bring in some extra homemade cookies, a holiday treat, or donuts for everyone to help themselves too.  While we all love a nice free snack that’s easy to grab and take back to our desks, we also know it increases our chances of attracting ants. However, being a pest control company, we have a pretty good handle on how to prevent pests and how you can too.

Following are some simple tips for an ant free workspace to share with your co-workers:

Don’t leave food out overnight.

Plastic containers do more than just keep those home-made cookies fresh. Store those home-made cookies in a container with a lid – the extra step of opening and closing it is worth it, especially at night. Food should never be left out when the office is empty.

Clean up the crumbs!!

If things get a little messy while you eat, make sure to clean it up when you are finished. Crumbs may seem small, but they are enough to let the ants know there is a bigger food source waiting for them. Keep this in mind when you pull that candy bar out of your desk for a 2pm snack as well – ants don’t know the difference between the break room and office space, if they find crumbs they invade.

Wipe down surfaces

Just because there aren’t crumbs, it doesn’t mean there isn’t food residue. Do your best to wipe down any surfaces food may have come in contact with a disinfectant at the end of each day. If the ants can smell tiny crumbs, you better believe they can smell the sugary sweet soda that you spilled on the counter.

Leave ant removal to the professionals

While there are things that you can do to prevent the problem from happening in the first place, you should call a professional pest control company if you notice a problem. People tend to think of ants as an easy fix and run to the store and pick up a can labeled “quick” or “rapid" kill and apply it where they see the ants.  In most cases, this ends up making the problem worse since the ants panic and begin making nests elsewhere throughout the facility. Your best bet is to call a professional and let them know where you and your co-workers have been seeing ant activity.

It is great when people come together and share goodies to make the work day go a bit faster, but it’s even better when it doesn’t cause an infestation of tiny critters. Talk to your co-workers about practicing these preventative methods and contact Cooper Pest Solutions at 1-800-949-2667 if you see any pest activity in your workplace.
