800-949-2667How Do You Know If You Have a Rat Infestation?
Keep an eye out for these definitive signs of a local rat problem:
- Rat Droppings: Notably larger than mouse droppings, these are dark, blunt, and capsule-shaped.
- Gnaw Marks: A rat's teeth grow continuously throughout its life. They must relentlessly chew on hard materials to keep the length manageable. If you spot fresh teeth marks on wood beams, wires, or food packaging, rats are the definitive culprit.
- Nesting Material: Typically hidden away in quiet, dark spaces like crawlspaces, attics, or behind large appliances where they won't be disturbed.
- Scratching Sounds: Frequently heard overhead or inside wall cavities during late-night hours when the nest becomes active.
- Rub Marks: Because of their oily fur, rats leave behind dark, greasy, and shiny streaks along baseboards and heavily traveled structural paths.

- Provides rugged, long-lasting performance against persistent chewing pests
- Guarantees long-term defense against indoor rat nesting and wildlife invasions
- Endures the most volatile local seasonal weather extremes
- Protects your entire household from a wide variety of secondary pests simultaneously

What is the difference between a Norway rat and a Roof rat?
The easiest way to separate them is by where they live and their body proportions.
- Norway Rats (Brown/Sewer Rats): These are heavy, stocky rodents with blunt noses, small ears, and a tail that is shorter than their body. They are ground-dwellers that prefer nesting in basements, crawlspaces, or burrows beneath concrete slabs.
- Roof Rats (Black Rats): These are sleeker, lighter, and built for agility. They have pointed noses, large ears, and a tail that is longer than their body (used for balance). True to their name, they are excellent climbers that nest high up in attics, trees, and rafters.
How fast do rats reproduce, and how big can a single infestation get?
They reproduce with terrifying efficiency. A single female rat can become pregnant at just 8 to 12 weeks old.
Her gestation period is only about 21 to 23 days. She can produce 4 to 7 litters a year, with an average of 8 to 12 pups per litter. Because she can mate again immediately after giving birth, a single pair of rats and their rapidly maturing offspring can theoretically produce well over 1,000 descendants in just one year if food and shelter are abundant.
Can rats actually climb up plumbing and come out of toilets?
Mosquitoes need standing water to breed and shaded areas to rest during the day. Common culprits include clogged gutters, birdbaths, plant saucers, kids' toys, and low-lying areas where water collects. Even a bottle cap's worth of water can support mosquito eggs. During our inspection, we'll identify these problem spots and give you tips to reduce breeding sites on your property.
Snap traps vs. live traps vs. glue boards: Which is most effective?
For structural control, traditional snap traps are widely considered the most effective and humane tool for a few reasons:
- Snap Traps (Winner): Modern wooden or plastic snap traps deliver a quick, fatal blow. They are inexpensive, reusable, and keep the rodent contained where you can find and dispose of it immediately (unlike poison, which allows them to crawl away and die inside your walls).
- Live Traps (High Effort): While humane in theory, they require you to relocate the rat. Rats are incredibly territorial; releasing them nearby means they will just run right back inside, while releasing them far away usually results in them dying of stress or predation.
- Glue Boards (Not Recommended): They are generally ineffective for large adult rats, which can often pull themselves free or drag the trap away. They are also considered inhumane, as the animal dies slowly of dehydration or suffocation.
