Contrary to popular belief, citronella candles provide mosquito protection for a very short radius, which is often destroyed by a slight breeze or the wind. “In the amount and concentration that is put out via candles, it’s not very effective,” says Joseph Conlon, a technical adviser for the American Mosquito Control Association. “As a matter of fact, it’s really not significantly more effective than any other candle would be.”
Mosquito repellant sprays only last a few hours, not controlling the insect population, but instead providing very temporary protection only to applied areas of skin. Use repellent sparingly being sure to cover all exposed skin. The American Mosquito Control Association also states that “a mosquito can find an unprotected spot the size of a dime. Saturation does not increase efficacy.”
